Spinal Cord Stimulation
Spinal cord stimulation is used when all other methods have failed to relieve the chronic pain and the patients life-style is seriously impaired. The object is to reduce the level of pain by stimulating nerve fibers in the spinal cord through low-intensity electrical impulse that interrupt the brain message to the brain. It requires a minor surgical procedure to implant the electrodes on the leads along a space adjacent to the spinal cord. This is done first on a trial basis and then permanently attached to a transmitter that generates the electrical impulse.
