Education and Cognitive Behavioral Techniques
The goal is to build patient confidence through patient education so that they adhere to a pain management program. By being educated about the cause of their pain and the treatments available the patient will be better able to effectively manage their pain, avoid re-injury, and live a more active life. Cognitive therapy teaches the patient how certain thinking patterns are causing pain symptoms and the associated feelings of despair and anxiety. Behavior therapy helps to identify and overcome certain habitual reactions to troubling situations and thereby avoid self-damaging behavior that can exacerbate the sensation of pain. Combine these two techniques provide a structured means of focusing on what needs to be changed and how to accomplish that change which would otherwise provoke pain or stressful reactions to pain.
