Psychological Evaluation and Counseling
An important element of understanding the causes and effects of chronic pain is to better understand those activities in our lives that contribute to the feeling of pain. It is helpful for a pain professional to assist the patient in sorting out what stress, anxiety and depression is resulting from the pain and what psychological factors are contributing to the manifestation of the pain. Often a better understanding of the nature of the pain will allow the patient to more effectively return to normal daily activities without the anxiety that the pain is a sign of danger and activity should be avoided. Various relaxation and distraction techniques can be used, as well as pacing ones work activities to avoid re-injury.
