Initial Assessment
The management of chronic pain is approached the same way as any other chronic medical condition by a complete review of the patients symptoms in the context of the patients medical history. A comprehensive physical exam is performed with particular emphasis on the location of the symptoms and any associated impairment of physical functions. To better understand the cause of the pain specific laboratory, imaging or electrophysiological studies may need to be performed. These studies will not be repeated if the patients referring physician has already performed them. An experienced physician will review all of the results of this complete assessment and develop a pain management plan with the patient.
